Community Phylogenetics: linking community ecology and evolutionary biology to your programming skills

How do species assemble in communities? What are the involved mechanisms? These questions have fascinated ecologists for decades. As the community assembly of organisms depends on historical and ecological phenomena, it is necessary to link evolutionary and ecological hypotheses testing to address these questions. By combining phylogenetic information and species geographical co-existence, ‘community phylogenetics’ emerged as field seeking to reveal patterns and processes driving the organization and structure of ecological communities. In this workshop, we will dive into the debates and controversies surrounding the community structure and learn some of the various approaches used by community phylogenetics to detect evolutionary patterns on community assembly.

Preamble

We developed this workshop and self-guided tutorial to help researchers acquire a short background on phylogenetic patterns of community structure.

It was originally instructed during the 3rd QCBS R Symposium, which happened between October 10th and 12th, 2019, at the Gault Nature Reserve (McGill University), in Mont-Saint-Hilaire, QC (Canada).

Part of the material was inspired in the content of the book Phylogenies in Ecology, by Marc W. Cadotte and Jonathan Davies (2016).

If you would like to provide feedback on this material, do not hesitate to get in touch!

We will highly appreciate your comments!

About

I am a Ph.D. Candidate in Biology at the Concordia University, in Montréal, Canada. I research how phylogenetic and spatial scales and current and historical components drive ecological and evolutionary patterns in species distributions.
